A look at what's happening at Willard

Reflecting on a dozen years of growth and change

My favorite part about working at Willard Library for the past 12 years has been that our target is always moving! Speaking of moving, in case you haven't heard I'm heading to Ithaca, N.Y., where I will join the Cornell University Library in January. I have thoroughly enjoyed my time in Battle Creek and will miss all friendly people I regularly see...

A world of magazines at your fingertips

RB Digital is one of the least-used of all of the Willard apps, but it's one of my favorites. More than any other library app, this one has saved my household money. The RB Digital app is the best way to access Willard's collection of free magazine subscriptions. I'm not a huge magazine reader, but I like to have them on hand when I'm traveling or ...

Digital services are free and easy

Willard Library can save you money on your digital purchases each month! Gone are the early days of ebooks when you had to go through 47 steps (I counted once.) to transfer an ebook onto your device. Now, you can get ebooks, magazines, videos, and music conveniently and free with your Willard Library card and the following apps. I use the Freegal M...

Check out the birds of Battle Creek this summer

There's a new picture book called "Ruby's Birds," and the bird life in it looks a lot like what you might find in Battle Creek. Ruby and her babysitter go to the park to look for a migrating golden-winged warbler. On the way, they encounter 13 other species that you are likely to see in urban environments, and I'm happy to report that I have observ...

With Freegal, the beat goes on and on

There are lots of free services available to download and stream music, but Freegal is my favorite. If you can get past the goofy name—it comes from Free + Legal music streaming—I'm sure it will join your regular app rotation. When Freegal first launched, I used it to look up my favorite songs and bands, and with more than 15 million songs in their...

Head Outdoors with Willard

If I ask you to imagine a library activity, you probably think of something inside, right? This winter, Willard Library offered indoor story times with partners from the Kellogg Bird Sanctuary and Leila Arboretum . As we move into spring and summer, we will have some outdoor experiences for all ages, too! What is That Bird? Check out (literally) Wi...

Celebrate Love Your Library Month

February is Love Your Library Month, but here at Willard, we feel the love all year long! My favorite chair at the library is at the Information Desk. When I'm out slinging books and answering questions, I hear from area residents and guests to our community that they appreciate the study rooms at downtown Willard, the vibe of the Helen Warner Bran...

We never outgrow being read to

Recently I've been invited to be the "mystery reader" at several local elementary schools, and as I'm selecting my books to share, I always think back to the teachers and parents who read to my classes. Turns out, this isn't something I've ever outgrown; I still like it when people read to me! My kids read to me every day for a few minutes at bedti...

Make a Reading Resolution to explore a new genre

If you know me at all, you know I love coffee, birds, and book lists! January is a great time of year for readers because of all the "Best Books of 2018" lists that start circulating online. I'm going to throw one more list on the stack, just in case you are thinking about setting a Reading Resolutions for the New Year to explore a new genre. Here a...

Welcome to Shelf. Life.

Welcome! Willard Library is committed to creating a community of readers and a world of possibilities. The name of this new blog playfully reflects an important component of this philosophy: the intersection of your life with library services. A book on a shelf is an object; an open book in your hands is a collection of ideas or adventures. With th...
