A look at what's happening at Willard

What to do with all those toilet paper tubes

Many of us have been home for several weeks now. I don't know about you, but life is getting a little dull around the Dillinger household.

As a parent of a very energetic only child, I'm struggling with ways to keep my daughter occupied while I'm working from home. My family and I are also in a rut with dinner, TV shows, and ideas for family activities. And, what can we do with all those toilet paper tubes?!?

So, what's my go-to source when I need inspiration? Pinterest, of course! Willard Library's awesome staff is busy adding all sorts of ideas to our Pinterest boards. Here are a few that I have consulted for ideas.

Easy Kid Crafts (i.e. toilet paper tube inspiration!). The Easy Kid Crafts board has tons of ideas for craft projects using household items, including toilet paper tubes! My daughter and I have already made butterflies and unicorns.

STEAM-makerspace The STEAM-makerspace board contains fun, educational ideas for all ages. Ideas include Lego zip lines, crystal growing, how to make a stop-motion video and edible science experiments. Crystal growing with borax and pipe cleaners is really neat!

Free Printables Looking for activity sheets for the kiddos? Try the Free Printables board. There are coloring pages, educational worksheets, bookmarks and more!

Virtual Experiences from Home I love how so many organizations have created virtual tours for us to view at home. The Virtual Experiences from Home board includes tours and webcams around the world. If you need to "get away" for a minute, take a field trip to Binder Park Zoo, tour the Boston Children's Museum or explore the surface of Mars!

Willard Staff Picks Every month Willard staff members gather to discuss what we've been reading, watching and listening to. We have even been meeting virtually, while the library has been closed, to share suggestions. Check out our recommendations on the Willard Staff Picks board.

ebook Bestsellers Because the library buildings are closed and I no longer have access to all those beautiful brand-new books, I have turned to borrowing ebooks through Willard's digital apps. The eBook Bestsellers board features a number of popular ebooks through Overdrive. Look here to find your next great read.

Michigan Cooking Looking for new dinner recipes? Try cooking some Michigan inspired meals, found on the Michigan Cooking board. I'm excited to try the Michigan Chicken Cherry Salad, Vernor's Bundt Cake with Ginger Glaze and Michigan Maple Peanut Butter Sheet Cake.

These boards are just the tip of the iceberg! There are so many more boards and ideas to explore on our Pinterest page. I hope you check it out and find some ideas to help keep you sane.

From your friends at Willard, stay safe and we look forward to seeing you when the library is open again.

April is reading "Dare to Lead," by Brene Brown and "Surprise Me," by Sophie Kinsella on Overdrive. April is also listening to Willard's own podcast Willard Library unBound.

The STEAM Makerspace Pinterest board had directions on crystal growing with borax and pipe cleaners, which turned out really neat!
