Willard Library has several exciting improvements planned for the downtown location this winter, with plans to enhance several spaces and elevate the library experience for the entire community. At the heart of the renovations is a reimagining of the downtown Children’s Room space, aimed to create an even more welcoming destination for families.
Children’s Room Renovation
“The Children’s Room renovation plans are designed to spark children’s imagination and creativity,” said Library Director Matt Willis. He continued, “an accessible, forest-themed play structure will be installed, inspiring discovery and learning, while also serving as a wonderful place to host themed programs.” In addition, a STEM learning zone will be featured alongside fresh paint, carpet, furniture, and displays. Director of youth services Tynisha Dungey added, “Honestly, I am excited to see how everything comes together. I can’t wait to see our guests’ faces when they see the new Children’s Room.”
Other Updates Throughout the Library
- Lowering shelving on the second floor to allow more natural light
- Lobby refresh to create a lighter, more welcoming space
- Design updates to preserve the Library’s Mid Century Modern aesthetic
Community Partnerships
Several projects are underway in partnership with local businesses and community members. A new mural by acclaimed artist Jamari Taylor of Jaylei Art will be featured in the children’s room. Live plants will be placed throughout the library in collaboration with Plumeria Botanical Boutique, including installing hanging plants from the mezzanine opening on the second floor. In addition, a gallery system will be installed in the lobby to showcase community artwork.
Work Already Completed
The library has implemented many improvements already in 2024, including upgrading to energy-efficient LED lighting at both locations, installing a custom fishtank that has become a favorite among library guests, and creating a Serenity Space on the second floor featuring a waterfall and bamboo plants to offer a tranquil environment for relaxation, device charging, and work.
Renovation Schedule and Access
The library will remain accessible during renovations through temporary adjustments. The Children’s Room will be closed to the public Jan. 2 -10, with very limited collection access. Beginning Jan. 11, a temporary children’s room will be located in the second floor programming room, accessible via the stairs and elevator in the lobby. Children’s programming will relocate to the Lower Level during this time. Dungey assured, “our programming schedule will not change. We wanted to make sure the guests’ experience continued with the programs and services we provide with the least amount of inconvenience.” Tentatively, the newly renovated children’s room will reopen in mid-March.
Willis is energized by the upcoming changes, “These renovations will create even more opportunities for our community to discover, grow, and connect,” said Willis.
