Willard Library has launched a new monthly program, “Simply Stories” designed to bring storytime to families at convenient weekend hours. The series, created in response to community members expressing a need, provides a wonderful opportunity for parents, caregivers, and young children to share the love of reading together. The next Simply Stories is Saturday, Nov. 2 at 11 a.m. in the downtown location children’s room.
Director of youth services Tynisha Dungey described Simply Stories as “an abbreviated version of our traditional storytimes held on Tuesdays and Wednesdays at 10 a.m. Participants should expect a song, a wonderful story or two, and an activity related to the story.” As a more relaxed version of storytime, Simply Stories creates “a wonderful opportunity for children who are beginning to learn how to sit and listen to books, as the program is short and sweet,” Dungey continued.
“Reading aloud to children is essential for language development, as it introduces them to new vocabulary and ideas,” said Dungey. “Listening to stories helps children develop empathy, and reading stories also assists with children learning how to express their feelings in a productive way, and builds a wonderful parent-child connection. We’re excited to offer this program at a time that allows more families to participate and experience these benefits.”
The Simply Stories program aligns with the library’s strategic goal of providing convenient and accessible programming for patrons, especially those who may not be able to attend weekday sessions. And while Simply Stories is tailored for preschoolers, all children are welcome to attend. For those needing a short break, the Children’s Room offers other activities to keep them engaged.
