One Wednesday each month, Willard Library’s downtown lower level will be transformed into a safe, fun space for families, caregivers, and those experiencing dementia to enjoy. CareWell services and Willard Library are collaborating for this monthly “Dementia Friendly Night,” featuring resources, mutual support, and fun.
The event will feature a variety of engaging activities, thoughtfully designed to foster connection, creativity, and comfort for attendees including music, crafts, painting, puzzles, photo opportunities, and snacks and beverages. Social services librarian Stephanie Boyd explained some of the benefits of the selected activities. “Music awakens the brain, and with it, the rich memories associated with familiar songs,” she said. In addition, “painting and crafts are a way to express feelings safely and with creativity, and puzzles are both entertaining and cognitively beneficial.”
Snacks and beverages will be available during the event, but attendees are also free to bring their own favorite snacks to share with others. Throughout the evening, guests are encouraged to take photos, capturing special moments together.
Resources and information about local support groups and services will also be available. CareWell services will be on hand to provide guidance and support.
“Dementia Friendly Night is an opportunity for families to relax a little and have fun while connecting with others facing similar challenges,” said Boyd. “Dementia can be an isolating diagnosis, and we want to create a safe, welcoming space where all feel comfortable and supported.”
Dementia Friendly Night will be offered monthly on Wednesdays, Oct. 16, Nov. 20, and Dec. 18. Click here to register for the December session.
